The issue IS that although the Canon supplied driver for the 64 bit Windows 7 OS loads the WIA driver is required for the scanner to operate. The WIA driver that came with the 4200F is 32 bit and will not load.

Contacted Canon support and finally got them to understand the situation.

Looks like the only solution is to purchase a new, compatable, scanner.

Canon won’t get the business.

Actually, the oprating system cannot block the scanner by system area. This issue can occur by incompatible driver or damaged hardware. I suggest you perform the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.

1. Unplug the Scanner and plug it on another machine for a test. Does it work fine on another machine?

2. Uninstall all printer drivers and Scanner drivers on the machine, and then reinstall the Scanner driver for Windows 7 64bit again. For your reference, please download the driver from the link below:

First, I would like to confirm the following questions:

1. Is there an exclamation mark or question mark in Device Manager after plugging the scanner? If so, please let me know.

2. Which software is used on the machine to scan file, the built-in application or Canon software? When trying to use the application to scan, is there any error information?

At this stage, please download the Canon software and install it for a test.

Then, please use the Canon application to scan file again.

If there is any error message, please upload it for research. Meanwhile, please access the following folder and upload the setupapi.dev.log file.

1. There are no marks of any kind next to any item in the device Manager after plugging in the Scanner.

2. The Canon Scanning software has always been used. The error message alwaws comes after the scanner fails to initiate the scan. The error message appears in a window with the title From ScanGuard CS «Cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected or Scanner turned off. Check status. Scanner driver will be closed.» Under this message in a second window is another that says » TWAIN data transfer error.»

2 min error message as in 2 above appears.

Onthe «Devices and Printers» panel, the CanoScan appears BUT when clicked on an Exclamation point message appears saying:
! You need a WIA driver to use this device. Please install it from the Installation CD or manufacturer’s website and try again.

Didn’t we go through this with the downloads?

It sounds to me like one of two things happening:
Either;
A) You have TWAIN drivers installed and are initiating scans with a WIA only software-
or
B) reverse of above.

Have you tried initiating scans through any other image editing software?

I had a similar problem with a Canoscan Lide60 scanner and both canon scanning software and Photoshopx64. Both programs use Windows Image Aquistition (WIA) but the scanner communicates only through TWAIN. Had to scan only to 32 bit software that will accept TWAIN communication to use the scanner. (Not a problem for me as Photoshop installs both versions)

I’ve also seen where scanners install with an either/or on the communication driver. Yours may support both but only one (the wrong one for your software) installs automatically.

Might be worth checking.

The Vista WIA driver for the Canon LIDE25 works fine with Windows 7

Just install the wia driver for vista 64 and it works.

You need to extract them manually from the zip and then do an update driver from the device manager

How do you install the wia driver for vista 64? I downloaded the vista driver package and unpacked it for my mp500, but there doesn’t seem to be a way just to update the wia driver.

I’m having the same issue as everyone else- my canon mp500 prints and copies, but gets errors when trying to scan. Just spent an hour with canon tech support (2nd time, tried six months ago too) and they say it’s microsoft’s problem. I don’t think so, though, seems to be a driver issue. I’m also going to try to find some twain drivers for windows 7 see if that works.

When you extract them, you right click on «Computer» and then open the device manager. From there, you double click on your device, and then you click update driver. It will ask you if you want to automatically install or manually install, select manually and then browse to the location that you extracted the files.

Oh, and by the way, I was able to bypass the wia issue by going to Word, Excel, or Adobe Pro and import from scanner. WIA is the application that lets you look at the scan output, however, other applications hold their own image aquisition product, which allows you the ability to bypass the windows image aquisition software.

Hi, Like many others I am unable to get my 4200F to scan from Win 7 (Home Premium) 64bit

I have downloaded 4200fvst648620a_64en

I have a 8400, what I get is similar and different.

When clicking on the Scanner in the control pannel «Devices and printers» pictures section, I get «you Need a WIA driver to use this device» Asumption, this isn’t going to work EVER. BUT how could it have worked before?

If anyone should come up with changes in drivers, or changes in backwards compatability with W7 64 for this particular problem, i would be interested.

За это спасибо, совершенно в голову не пришло туда заглянуть. а оказалось, что при событии начала сканирования с какой-то радости задан запуск несуществующей программы

«Cannot properly communicate with the scanner. Make sure the scanner is on, properly connected, and properly set up to scan. Fix: Epson Scan cannot communicate with the Scanner

Epson scanners are very popular in the scanning industry and have made way to millions of homes and corporate offices around the world. Epson scanners may either be standalone or may be integrated with a printer facility. They are known for their robustness and their ability to scan clear documents and images.

There has been an arising problem with Epson scanners where the scanner application fails to scan for any documents. This problem can be traced back to a number of different reasons ranging from problems in the scanner drivers to incorrect configuration of the network.

Note: This article is meant for all operating systems (Windows 10, 8, and 7). It also includes workarounds when after updating to Windows 10, the scanner fails to work.

Solution 1: Running Scanner Software with Administrative Privileges

The first and foremost thing you should try is running the scanning application with administrative privileges. Many applications that require input from an external source require you to grant them administrative privileges so they can perform all of their operations without any interference or security checks. You should change the application’s settings and allow administrative access.

Note: Your account should have admin powers to execute this method. Make sure to make your account an admin before trying this out.

Solution 2: Fixing Wireless Connection

In numerous cases, the Epson scan application fails to associate the scanner with the network LAN address automatically. This issue arises if you are connecting to the scanner using a Wireless Network. While you can still search for addresses automatically within the application, it fails to do most of the time. To counter this issue, we can manually add the address by fetching it from the command prompt and make your scanner working again in no time.

As you can see, the IP Address of the scanner is “192.168.0.195” in this case. You can enter this address in your browser and if successful, you will be able to open the scanner’s properties.

Solution 3: Using Shorter USB Cables

Although many tech manufacturers claims their devices can be connected using very long USB cables, only a few of them live up to their spoken words. In a nutshell, the more you prolong a USB cable for the connection between scanner and computer, the more signal losses will occur.

With this being said, if you are using the scanner on the other side of the room, you should fetch another USB cable which is of shorter length and try connecting the scanner. Relocate it closer to your temporarily and check if this workaround works. If it does, it means there was the loss of signals and it was causing the computer not being able to communicate.

Solution 4: Restarting Shell Hardware Detection

The Shell Hardware Detection service monitors and provides notifications for Autoplay hardware events. This service is used as the main tool for detecting when other hardware is plugged into your system. This service is responsible for detecting scanners, printers, removable storage devices, etc. If there is a problem with this service, your computer might not detect the scanner. We can try restarting this service and reconnect the scanner and see how this goes.

Solution 5: Turning off Password Protected Sharing

Password protected sharing is a security mechanism that ensures that the sharing of files and folders over the network is safe. If it is turned on, people on your network will not be able to access the files on your computer unless they enter the password provided by you manually. There were frequent cases reported where this very mechanism was causing problems for the scanner to connect. We can disable this mechanism, reconnect the scanner and see how it goes. You always revert back the changes if things don’t go our way. We will also check if Printer Discovery is turned on.

Solution 6: Changing from LPT1 to USB 001 Virtual Printer Port

Line Print Terminals belong to the rather old technology of connecting printers and scanners to your computer. Nowadays, most of the printers have transitioned from LPT to USB. We can try changing the ports of the printer and see if this makes any difference. This issue was particularly known to work for users who lost the functionality of the scanner after migrating to Windows 10.

Solution 7: Resetting Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)

Another workaround which we can try before updating the drivers of the scanner is resetting Windows Image Acquisition service. This service is related to capturing the images when you scan using your computer. It is an application programming interface (API) that enables graphics software to communicate with imaging hardware such as scanners.

This process is a core part of fetching the required scanner document into your computer. Resetting this service can fix any problems if it was at fault.

You can also try stopping the service and starting it later on manually if resetting doesn’t work.

Solution 8: Updating Scanner Drivers

If all the above solutions don’t work, we can try updating the scanner drivers. You should navigate to the manufacturer’s website and download the latest scanner drivers available. Make sure to download the exact drivers meant for your printer. You can look for the model number present on the front of your printer or in its box.

Note: There are a few cases where a newer driver doesn’t work. In that case, download an older version of the driver and install it using the same method described below.

Note: If your scanner is inbuilt with your printer, you should update the drivers of your printer using the same method explained below. In that case, you should look in the category of ‘Print Queues’.

Select the driver file you downloaded using the browse button when it appears and update it accordingly.

Note: If updating the drivers don’t work, you should exit all the scanner applications and uninstall them accordingly. Now go back to the device manager and uninstall the scanner/printer by right-clicking it and selecting “Uninstall”. Once uninstalled, unplug the scanner and download the latest drivers from the website and install them after you plug the hardware again.

Cannot Communicate with the Scanner

A few months ago I bought an Epson DS-510 scanner to try and keep up with the ever growing mound of paper that you deal with. And overall it’s been a great scanner. It’s fast. Scans duplex. And the scans look good. But there’s been one nagging issue and that’s a Cannot Communicate with the Scanner error message.

If my computer went to sleep or I unplugged the scanner to move my notebook, the next time I plugged it in I’d get the dreaded Cannot Communicate with the Scanner message and would be unable to scan until I restarted my computer.

I tried all the fixes that Google found for me. Swapped out cables. Tried different ports. Reinstalled drivers. Nothing seemed to work.

Then I came across a site that had the fix. And I’d love to link you there, but I forgot to bookmark it.

And it’s a pretty easy fix. What looks like was happening is that the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service was hanging up. In the services list it showed as paused, which was a little weird.

The Fix

So, on to the fix. First go to the Task Manager. Easiest way to get there is press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and pick Task Manager from the menu that comes up.

Find the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) process and select End Process. You’ll get a nasty warning from Windows. I’ve just ignored it and haven’t had any issues. Can’t promise you’ll have the same luck.

And, you may be able to skip ending the task. But I had to do this for the next step to work.

Now you want to go to the Services list. Easiest way to get there is bring up the start menu and start typing Services. You can also get there through the Administrative Tools.

Once there you’re looking for the same Windows Image Acquisition service that you just ended. It’ll probably show Stopped. (It shows running here because I had already restarted it)

Right click and select Start.

Or, from the command line

The second step is too many clicks for me, so I wrote this little batch file to handle the restarting for me.

I’ve got it pinned to my start menu and set to run as an administrator. When it runs it tries to stop the WIA service and then restart it. My hope was that this batch file would take care of both steps above, but doesn’t seem able to actually stop the service when it’s hung up. So I do the first step through the task manager and then run this script to restart.

And, assuming it comes back up, that’s it. I’ve done this a dozen or more times by now and it’s worked every time.

1. Download, install and run Driver Booster.

2. Hit Scan. Then Driver Booster will start searching for any problematic drivers on your PC.

3. Find out Print queues and then Update the Epson scanner driver.

Solution 3: Change Epson Scanner IP Address

1. Head to Control Panel > Programs and Features.

If you find it difficult to locate the Programs and Features window, try to search it in the Control Panel search box.

2. Then find out Epson Scan and right click it to Uninstall it.

3. Reboot your computer.

4. When logging in again, go to File Explorer > C:\Windows > twain_32.

5. Right click twain_32 folder to rename it twain_32_old.

Here you can also change twain-32 to any other names other than itself.

6. Restart Windows 10 again.

7. Go to Epson site to download the latest Epson Scan software online.
