I have installed the game from a disc on a partition of my HDD (E) because C was full ; and I didn’t want to bind the game with the «My Games» folder.
Here are the 2 only things that I have made different from a classic installation.
Has any of you dealt with such error message and fixed it yet? Please help me, I feel like naked with a spoon in the middle of the arctic ocean. I guess you’re my last solution, after that if nothing works, I’ll be forced to bring the game back to the store 🙁 🙁

one more thing: when you uninstall the game reboot your system before attempting a reinstall. This might be why you don’t get the option to create the folder in the My Games folder.

so I have the same problem. I have the Fallout 4 DVD. Install, update by Steam. When I launch the game, I have this message : «Unable to find an INI file. Please reinstall Fallout 4».
So, desinstall, cleaning, and I download again the game (4 times) but always the same message. Impossible to play with Fallout 4.
Hi Mansen. Yes obviously. But I installed the game 4 times and 4 times same errors. I installed Spiderman one hour ago. No worries, the game launches correctly. And I’m not the only one.

So, do the INI files physically exist? They should be located at
C:\Users\ \Documents\my games\Fallout4\
If not, I could upload mine somewhere and you could try if that works out.
I’ll just suggest having Steam do a game cache check and try again.
I presume all of you that have this issue have made sure you have read/write privileges / permissions set / allowed for the MyDocuments folder tree.
Because it sounds like Windows is blocking write access to the directory and file that
Steam and the game is trying to create.
It might be some odd regional issue that is over my pay grade.
Another thought. If using some 3rd party Anti Virus package, disable
that garbage and try again.
Just a idea. I’m running out of them.

Might be permission issue, or files might be set as Read Only.
Right click the files and make sure they are not in read only mode.

Check your secuirty applications and set game executable as exception for them.
Also make sure that your Windows user accaunt has adequate rights to use INI-files from Documents section. That problem would be very rare, but I have seen it sometimes.

I’ve run into a very frustrating problem. Essentially, when I launch up Nexus Mod Manager, I get this:

«You have no Fallout 4 ini file. Please run Fallout 4». Unhelpful, as I run Fallout 4 and this persists, but since when are instructions from these types of errors ever helpful.
Now, I know that mods have worked on this computer in the past, but it broke and the OS reinstalled, so I had to start from scratch.
I went back to the instructions on how to mod, and went through the motions of editting the «ini» files that were labeled as configuration files with the necessary text. One thing I didn’t have was a fallout4custom.ini file, but I found a «solution» online that said to just make a text document and then copy and paste what’s supposed to be in their.
tl;dr I want to use CBBE but I can’t!
Just updated my computer to windows 10, re-editted the files and did what you said. Unfortunately, no change. I still apparently have no Fallout4 ini file and should run Fallout 4 to initiate it.

Just updated my computer to windows 10, re-editted the files and did what you said. Unfortunately, no change. I still apparently have no Fallout4 ini file and should run Fallout 4 to initiate it.
Microsoft likes to change where things are stored with every version of Windows (One of my fac things avout Microsoft /sarcasim), Have NMM find the fallout 4 directories again

You could try running Fallout4Launcher as admin and see whether it creates an ini with different permissions that can be read by the manager.

No fallout4.ini file
When i install the nexus software it says i dont have a ini file. I have tried to do some mods, and there is no ini file in my fallout4 folder. I don’t know what to do now. Game runs fine but i can’t mod it.
What do i do to fix this? I have tried to add a Fallout4.ini folder but i can’t type in there to put stuff one of the mods i am trying to do wants in there. I’m stumped at this point.
Initiation or ini files should be in the Docmuments/My Games/Fallout4 folder. The file is created upon very first start-up of the game.
The file is write protected by default. Right-click it and choose «properties» from the pop-up menu and then untick the «Read Only» box at the bottom of the «General» tab in the tabs menu. Then make these changes to the file (open with Notepad or get Notepad++) under the [Archive] header, right under the last line:
Save and again make the ini file «Read Only». Then mod you heart out.

Open the Fallout4 file and do as explained in my first reply.
To set extensions to visible, open explorer and at the top of the window hit «Tools» in the toolbar (I’m still on Win7, so it might be different for later versions) and then hit «Folder Options» in the roll-out menu.
In the new menu, open the «View» tab and search for the «Hide extensions for known file types» line and untick the box in front of it.
Now, all extensions are visible. To set them back to invisible, do the same thing as before but now tick the box in front of «Hide extensions for known file types».
Look in your documents folder. That’s where my ini’s are. On W10. As Jimmy said, Documents is a system folder it’s not in the game folder.

Madcat was in the right folder, but the extensions don’t show, as I mentioned. That’s why he thinks there’s no Fallout4.ini file.

FYI: I bought a brand new M.2 SSD, installed it as my new hard drive (old drive was made secondary) installed a fresh activated copy of Windows 10 and started fresh with everything. I don’t know if this had something to do with file extensions being shown out of the box or not but figured I would post this extra info in case someone is in the same situation and/or had this very same thing happen to them after installing new drive.
I also made sure the entire «My Documents» folder wasn’t set to «Read-Only.» as well. Even if you set the ini files to be «non-read only» it will not work unless you set the entire «my documents» folder to «non-read only»
