I’m afraid it’s original version and videos for you buddy. Need pascal or above, and tbh my 2060 oc only does 50fps at medium so you’d just be wishing you had 2080 money lol
Yeah it’s shame they made this another nvidia proprietary bs. I mean the GTX970 or similar GPUs can run other ray tracing mods just not RTX stuff.
I will probably hold on until the next nvidia generation because even in RTX performance I don’t find this generation that amazing in performance, besides that with my kind of budget I would get like a 2060 and I don’t think 6GBs VRAM is enough «future proof» with the next gen consoles around the corner, even if I find 4GBs (or 3.5 whatever) enough for now at 1080p.
Is it restricted all the way? or does it at least let you use the demo without rtx enabled?
Even without rtx, I think it’s a welcome update to the engine.

Without RTX it’s just same old Q2PRO.
Which I’m actually fine with. Native Linux compatibility and no need to use a patch or source port to play at modern resolution. If I ever get an rtx card it’ll just be icing on the cake
Use the launch option «+set vid_rtx 0» (without the quotes) to launch in OpenGL

Thanks for the tip, the game actually launches that way but with no ray tracing it’s not worth it lol

What RT mods are you talking about? The reshade stuff that some people put out like this which has no good point for using? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ccv8No-suMs?
Depending on what you’re talking about there’s zero comparison and it may not actually be RT other than some people thinking it is because it mimics it to a small extent.
The CryEngine RT demo is maybe about the only thing that’s real and it still cuts some corners / has various problems. The recommended minimum for which is still higher than the 970 (Nvidia GTX 1070 8 GB VRAM)
Berserker does not ray tracing at all.
Of course that this is very easy to see differences in the outputs of Berserker and Quake 2 RTX engines.
What I am saying is that, in my opinion, the output of Berserker is much both better and nicer than the output of Yamagi and Q2 PRO (old Quake 2 OpenGL).
The graphics of Berserker is not modern, but it is close to modern.
Of course that the output of Quake 2 RTX is much both better and nicer than the output of Berserker and the output of Quake 2 RTX is indeed both modern and real unlike the output of Berserker, but since you say that you cannot run Quake 2 with RTX ON because that you don’t own a GPU that supports ray tracing then my suggestion is to play Quake 2 with the Berserker engine instead of playing Quake 2 with RTX OFF, that is equivalent to play Quake 2 with the Yamagi or Q2 PRO (old Quake 2 OpenGL) engine.
If you must play Quake 2 with RTX ON then you either need to wait until there is ray tracing emulator (will be extremely slow) or just buy any GPU that supports ray tracing.
If you both can’t wait for a ray tracing emulator and don’t want to spend a lot of money for a real ray tracing GPU then I am sorry for disappointing you, but you won’t going to play Quake 2 with RTX ON the way you want.
In my opinion, BEFORE the release of Quake 2 Ray Tracing (Q2RTX and Q2VKPT) in 2019 or even before this project started at all, Berserker WAS the best Quake 2 Engine of all times.
Of course that AFTER the release of Quake 2 Ray Tracing engine in 2019, the newest Quake 2 Ray Tracing engine is definitely the best Quake 2 engine of all times.
Berserker is now the second best Quake 2 engine, but still better than Yamagi and Q2PRO (old Quake 2 OpenGL) engine obviously.
This is up to you to decide what do you want to do and what not to do, I just advised you and told you something you can try.
This is your freedom to decide if to try it or not.

Что-то совсем не видно инициализацию Vulkan’a.

Quake II RTX
Hi, this message comes up whenever I try to start up this game.
So what you’re all saying is that my Computer isn’t powerful enough? (I’m not very tech savey so I’m afraid RTX GeForce 2060 doesn’t make any sense to me!)
Is there additional hardware I can purchase for my PC which would make this work? (Like an external ‘card’)
If you don’t have ray-tracing hardware, you can’t play a ray-tracing game.
There are many non-ray-traced versions of Quake 2 if that’s all you want. This one is for ray-tracing.
i have GTX1050i and have this problem.
Minimum:
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, or higher
It really isn’t difficult to understand.

Does this game run on a GeForce GTX 1050si 4GB?
So I have a RX 590 AMD 8GB GPU. And i have the same problem, can I play it?

What so hard to understand everyone if it’s not a Nvidia RTX version of video card IT WONT WORK.

Ray tracing is possible on any GPU.
Ray tracing is possible on any GPU.
So, we can play it with any GPU?
No, only 1060 6GB and above, the others are prevented from doing RT (DXR API workloads) at a driver level.
Every GPU can do RT calculations, after all it’s just a calculation.
Modding Quake II will allow you to use RT, though it’s not as good as actual RTX games.
If only RTX GPUs could do it, why are there so many videos of Minecraft being ray traced (technically path traced, in RTX’s case too) on weak old GTX hardware?
It’s possible, just Nvidia lock you out of it, because they want to sell new hardware, and because it will give you such bad performance.

I am helpless. I use a laptop and it is impossible for me to renew the GPU. It’s GeForce 940 MX, as old as possible 😀
Thank you for your consideration and helpful attitude.

It is definitely the case that that laptop is not sufficient for realtime ray tracing. Nothing was sufficient for realtime ray tracing until two years ago, though. Given that all the GPU makers are including hardware to accelerate ray tracing now, your next computer may well be sufficient.
This game is specifically created to showcase realtime ray tracing, as a tech demo and a research project. If you just want to play a modern implementation of Quake 2 there are lots of other options available.

Hello, all! Suroosh from the GeForce Community Team here.
Today, we’re excited to finally launch Quake II RTX. For any questions regarding installation, multiplayer, advanced user options, or ray tracing in Quake II, please take a look our FAQ: https://steamcommunity.com/games/1089130/announcements/detail/1607135761920478150
If you still have questions or want to give us any feedback, please post down below and we’ll do our best to help!
Thanks, everyone. Enjoy!
EDIT: We’ll be updating below with some of the more frequently asked questions as they come in.
Q: Recommended resolution?
A: Quake II RTX is best played at 1080p.
Q: Minimum for GPU?
A: Although the game can be played with the 10-series, it is highly recommended that you play with at least a RTX 2060.
Q: The game environment is very bright. Is there a way to change this?
A: Under the environment option in the Settings menu, choose the atmosphere that best suites your preferences.
Q: Why is GTX performance poor?
A: Quake II RTX implements path tracing, which is incredibly more intensive on hardware than any of the current RTX games out there. Without the dedicated RT cores in RTX GPUs, performance can suffer. To learn more about these technical details, please take a look our video about path tracing in Quake II RTX with Tony Tamasi. Video is on our FAQ page linked above.
Q: Will there be support for Steam Cloud saves (or achievements)?
A: Unfortunately, no. NVIDIA does not own the rights to Q2, and since we are making the modified engine open source, we cannot create and make calls to a Steam library.
