What does skinny legend mean?
Skinny legend is a term of endearment for a celebrity, usually a woman, whose fans consider them to be flawless but underappreciated. It’s also a meme where fans photoshop their idols to appear impossibly stick-figure thin.
The phrase in its primary sense isn’t meant to promote eating disorders or physical thinness. However, many people do use it to talk about being thin or wanting to be.

Where does skinny legend come from?
The sense of skinny in skinny legend is much more closely linked to the use in skinny love than anything else. Where skinny love is a sickly, unfulfilled love between two people, a skinny legend is a celebrity whose talents are seen as unsung or under-sung.
Skinny legend spread in summer 2016, largely in reference to Mariah Carey. Around this time, stans also started punning on skinny, taking its “not getting enough love” sense literally for “extremely thin” by photoshopping images of singers to look unrealistically, ridiculously small-waisted.
This drew a lot of attention, leading to huge spikes in both search interest and media buzz for the term during that month.

Reserved for only the most iconic and flawless pop culture idols, the term “skinny legend” is one of the hottest crazes to hit social media. The phrase has been especially trendy on Twitter, where it is used by “ stans ” to affectionately describe their favorite celebrities. Forget telling your favorite stars to “delete it, fat.” A new, thinner sheriff is in town.
Despite only recently gaining recognition, the phrase can actually be traced back to the glory days of “Gangnam Style” and #YOLO, where it was used infrequently to refer to a celebrity’s slender figure. Although it gradually moved away from this definition and now refers to one’s “iconic” status, regardless of their actual physical fitness, “skinny legend” has come under fire for its body-focused language and accompanying memes.
No matter the controversy, skinny legends continues to flood feeds and timelines across social media.
Skinny legend: A history
Skinny legend beginnings: 2012-2014
Although its exact origins remain a mystery, the term used in its modern definition can be found on Twitter as early as 2012. Not to be confused with Ghanaian musician Skinny Legend, the seeds of “skinny legend” as we know it today were laid by various “regular” users who sporadically incorporated the term into their tweets in positive or aspirational ways.

As stan culture rose in popularity, so did the phrase. The “original” skinny legend was none other than pop singer Christina Aguilera, who received the honor in early 2014 (though one user referred to her as a “ skinny queen ” in 2012). Although a few of the tweets alluded to her physical appearance, it is still unclear whether the phrase was directly addressing weight or body image.

The earliest use of the hashtag #skinnylegend was also used in 2014 to describe Xtina.
Surprisingly, Wiz Khalifa held some skinny legend status during this year as well.

Skinny legend becomes a thing: 2016-now
Stans of other fandoms quickly caught onto the trend and adopted it for their own celebrities, mostly female pop stars such as Demi Lovato and Britney Spears. Much like the endearing “ mom ” moniker, the new slang flooded timelines everywhere at the hands of young fans and their keyboards.
The occasional meme was also made, naturally.
According to Google Trends, “skinny legend” hit its peak as a search term in late May.
Mariah Carey is perhaps the celebrity most heavily associated with “skinny legend,” possibly due to a reply tweet that went viral in February 2017.

An Urban Dictionary definition was added shortly after in May. It defines “skinny legend” as a “phrase used by a social media sub-group called ‘stans.’ It is commonly used to refer to celebrities as Mariah Carey who are glamorous and talented, no matter their weight. It is also used ironically to refer to cute animals, people, objects etc. Twitter trolls use it often in their memes.”
A skinny legacy: What’s next?
As always, nothing remains unproblematic. Once a term of affection, “skinny legend” has now become a target for those who say it promotes harmful ideas about body image and feeds into diet culture. An article from Revelist criticized the phrase for seemingly equating thinness with importance and pointed out that users were also utilizing the term to refer to themselves and their eating habits.

In 2016 fans of pop stars and celebrities dubbed their favorite stars “icons,” but in 2018 there’s no higher praise than being called a “skinny legend.”
A skinny legend can be any weight, any size, any gender. The phrase is used as a term of endearment by stans who worship particular celebrities.
Mariah Carey is known as the original skinny legend but the term is regularly bestowed upon Raini Rodriguez, Wendy Williams, Christina Aguilera, Kim Kardashian, and more. More recently “skinny legend” has become widely understood as a compliment that can be used toward anyone.
Fans who use the term often accompany their messages with skinny legend “snake edits.” These photoshopped images make the object of their affection look as skinny as a snake and warp the person’s body to such an unrealistic and surreal level that it ends up looking like the image has been dragged through a tube.
“A skinny legend is like, someone who is super-iconic but so much so that they transcend being what they actually are and become skinny,” said Joyce, a 14-year-old in New York. “It’s used to describe mostly female celebs like Taylor Swift or Mariah Carey. It originated on Twitter with all the fans and stuff but now people use it like a meme. Like, they’ll say it about someone who is not really famous, like a dog. It’s like, ‘Wow that dog is so cute, it’s a skinny legend!!’ It’s how you express you like something.”
According to Know Your Meme, the phrase was originally used to praise Demi Lovato before being co-opted by Mariah Carey stans. It slowly grew over time, reaching a fever pitch on Twitter and Instagram over the past three months.
Skinny legend snake edits dominate many young users’ Explore pages, depending on what type of fandoms they engage in. Teens have even begun making snake edits of any object of their affection, including inanimate objects and favorite foods like Wheat Thins snacks or a plate of nachos.
But as the term bleeds further into the mainstream it has also generated backlash.
In January a website called Revelist published a screed against the term, claiming that it promotes unhealthy body image and eating disorders.
“At first glance, the saying is seemingly only used to refer to celebs who have finally achieved thinness, or have always been thin,” the writer incorrectly begins. “This is obviously problematic because it implies one can only achieve true success and ‘legendary’ status when they’re thinner, which is clearly not true. But it turns out tweeters are using the phrase when talking about themselves, too, which is even more problematic. The wording perpetuates food and body issues on a harmful level. in fact, so much so that some stans have been seriously affected by this idea that ‘thin = important.’”
The writer, like many observers, completely misinterprets the term. The young fans tweeting “skinny legend” at everything aren’t themselves defining or perpetuating unrealistic body image or the ideal of “thinness”—rather, it’s society and the media who promote this harmful idea, and the phrase skinny legend is an attempt to skewer it.
“The point is it’s parodying whatever standards the media has,” explains Joyce. “When people go photoshop celebs like, ‘she’s so skinny, she’s air,’ they’re making fun of the way the media is like ‘oh she’s skinny, she’s amazing.’”
“Being a skinny legend actually has nothing to do with how skinny someone is,” agreed Mikaela, a 15-year-old in San Francisco. “Calling someone ‘skinny’ really just means they’re iconic. You usually call someone a skinny legend as a joke, like ‘Wow your makeup is SUCH a look in that photo, what a skinny legend.’
“The phrase is used ironically. Nobody who is called a skinny legend is actually a legend because they’re skinny,” Mikaela said. “It’s really just making fun of the unrealistic expectation that celebrities should be skinny by over-exaggerating the way they are praised. The term skinny legend is obviously a joke, just like basically everything online. It really shouldn’t be taken literally.”
As one user on Twitter put it, “Being a skinny legend isn’t about being what other people deem as thin. It’s a frame of mind. We’re all skinny legends.”

While it’s unclear where exactly the slang term started, one of the earliest known posts to use the phrase as a term of endearment towards a celebrity was posted August 17th, 2015 to Twitter by user @minxiepop [1] about Christina Aguilera (shown below).
Spread
The phrase appeared over the following months particularly in reference to Demi Lovato. By July of 2016, the phrase saw more use with regards to Mariah Carey. On July 29th, 2016, Twitter user @C0UxPERX2 tweeted a photoshopped version of Carey, referring to her as a «skinny legend» (shown below).
On May 27th, 2017, the phrase was added to Urban Dictionary (shown below). [3]
On August 10th, 2017, Twitter user @lindxeyy tweeted a video of her screaming «Skinny» at Lady Gaga during a concert and Gaga looking surprised. The tweet gained 13,000 retweets and 36,000 likes (shown below).

A question about the video was posted to /r/OutOfTheLoop [5] the same day. The video was covered by Buzzfeed [4] on August 28th. Several photoshops of Carey making her look exceptionally skinny began circulating within the fandom as well. On January 31st, 2018, blog Revelist [7] wrote about the slang term, calling it problematic.
