The error: There is not enough space on the disk

You may encounter an error “There is not enough space available on the disk(s) to complete this operation” while doing some operations such create/shrink volumes with Disk Management in Windows 11/10/8/7.

Well, what does this error mean?В It is usually caused by the following 2 reasons:

Disk Management error: You may have some changes on your hard drive, but the Disk Management failed to detect the changes. Thus, when you were extending or creating new volume, you should rescan the disk.

MBR disk limit: The MBR partition style is old, and MBR disk only allows 4 primary partitions at most. Therefore, you can no longer create a fifth partition.

How to fix «there is not enough space on the disk” on Windows OS?

For different reasons, we have prepared two different methods to solve them, including using Disk Management and third-party tool. You can try them one by one to see if you can fix it.

Solution 1.В Rescan the disk

In most of the cases, you can simply click the option “Rescan Disks” under “Action” tab to fix this problem. After the partitions and volumes reloaded, you shall be able to shrink volume or do other operations.

Step 1. Press “Win + R” to launch “Run” program, and type “diskmgmt.msc” to open Disk Management. Click Action at the top, and then select Rescan Disks from the list.

Step 2. Shrink volume again after the disk is reloaded.

Then wait for it scans disks on your PC, and see if the issue is still there.

Solution 2. Convert MBR to GPT to fix there is not enough space on the disk

If your disk uses MBR partitioning, the error «There is not enough free space on the disk to complete this operation» may appear when creating partitions in Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7. The MBR partitioning method is older and only supports up to 4 primary partitions. So to solve this problem, you need to convert the MBR disk to GPT. Because GPT is a new partition style, it does not limit the number of partitions on the hard disk, so you can continue to create primary partitions.

Системный раздел, который чаще всего располагается на компьютерах на диске C, крайне желательно держать в чистоте и не засорять ненужной информацией. Но бывает наступает время, когда система пишет приблизительно так: «недостаточно места на диске C:» или вы не можете установить какую-нибудь программу из-за того что места элементарно не хватает, поэтому возникает вполне резонный вопрос: «как очистить диск от ненужных файлов?».

Пользователи, которые редко сталкиваются с подобной операцией (очистка диска C:), могут даже записать текущий показатель свободного пространства на диске, чтобы потом сравнить этот показатель с аналогичной цифрой, но уже после очистки, а также узнать, сколько удалось освободить места. Обычно недостаточно места на диске бывает из-за того что пользователь вовремя не удаляет скопившиеся ненужные данные например: фильмы. Также бывает недостаточно места на диске из-за самой операционной системы. Здесь я приведу несколько способов по очистке диска:

1. Прежде всего, необходимо просмотреть диск C на наличие на нём больших файлов: видео, аудио, архивов, не участвующих в работе системы. Эти файлы можно скопировать на другой диск или раздел диска. Но ни в коем случае не надо трогать системные файлы, даже если они имеют «странные» названия, работа системы может быть нарушена.

2. Далее следует запустить специальную утилиту по очистке диска. Запускается она следующим образом: надо зайти в «Мой компьютер», после чего щелкнуть правой кнопкой мышки на диске C и перейти в «Свойства», и в нем нажать кнопку «Очистка диска». В открывшемся окне необходимо выбрать виды файлов, которые будут анализироваться на возможность удаления: корзина, файлы отчетов windows, временные файлы и т.д. За тем «ОК».

3. К сожалению стандартная утилита «Очистка диска» очищает не все нужные разделы, и места на вашем диске все равно может быть недостаточно. В этом случае я рекомендую провести очистку жесткого диска вручную из временных папок Windows.
Предварительно для того чтобы увидеть многие папки надо сделать их видимыми. Располагаются эти папки по следующим путям:
c:\temp,
c:\windows\temp,
с:\Users\Владимир\AppData\Local\Temp(Владимир меняете на свою учетную запись).
Вы можете оттуда смело удалять все, у вас могут возникать ошибки с некоторыми файлами: «невозможно удалить файл», не надо пугаться. Просто файл в данный момент используется системой и его удалить нельзя.

4. Кроме очистки системного жесткого диска раздела для победы над проблемой «недостаточно места на диске» можно попробовать отключить функцию гибернации компьютера. В корневом каталоге системного раздела (прямо в корне диска С) располагается файл, с названием Hiberfil.sys. Файл является системным, поэтому он будет виден только при включённом режиме отображения скрытых и системных файлов. Размер этого файла обычно достаточно серьёзен. Если пользователем не используется гибернация, то после её отключения удалится и сам файл, что позволит освободить некоторое место на диске.

5. Достаточно опытные пользователи могут попробовать удалить ненужные/неиспользуемые программы, чтобы освободить ещё места на системном диске. Список всех установленных программ вызывается из «Панели управления» компьютера, в Win7 необходимо зайти в пункт «Программы и компоненты», а в WinXP – в «Установка и удаление программ».

6. Ещё один вариант увеличения места на системном диске: уменьшить файл подкачки. Но подобную операцию лучше не делать малоопытным пользователям, которые слабо представляют, что они вообще делают. Также можно почистить кэш используемых браузеров. Чтобы получить возможность сделать это, нужно нажать одновременно клавиши «Ctrl + Shift + Delete», находясь в самом браузере. Этот вариант рекомендуется если все равно недостаточно места на диске.

Ошибка «There is not enough space available on the disk(s) to complete this operation» при попытке выполнить сжатие дискового тома NTFS на хосте виртуализации Hyper-V с Windows Server 2012 R2

Работа с операционной системой Windows Server не бывает скучной, так как, порой, можно получить сюрприз с загадкой в самом неожиданном месте. Казалось бы, что можно ожидать от привычной функции, которую уже приходилось использовать десятки раз. С таким, абсолютно невозмутимым настроем, на одном из хостов виртуализации Hyper-V на базе Windows Server 2012 R2 я решил выполнить сжатие дискового тома NTFS (Shrink Volume) с ОС, чтобы освободить немного места на конце диска.

Стандартным способом, используя консоль Disk Management, я попытался выполнить сжатие выбранного NTFS тома.

Свободного места на томе было более чем достаточно, и было решено отрезать 10GB.

Однако, к моему удивлению, возникла ошибка, говорящая о нехватке доступного места для проведения операции » There is not enough space available on the disk(s) to complete this operation «

Повторная попытка провести операцию сжатия привела к той же ошибке.

Обратившись к консоли Event Viewer, было обнаружено, что в логе Windows Logs\Application в момент попытки сжатия фиксируется предупреждение с кодом 260 из источника Defrag с сообщением » Error: during volume shrink initiated on volume C: we failed to move a movable file extent «. В этом событии в деталях диагностической информации фигурирует отсылка на некий файл last unmovable file, который, как я понял, и препятствует перемещению дискового кластера.

Возникло подозрение, что удаление указанного файла, возможно решило бы проблему с невозможностью сжатия диска. Но что это за tmp-файл такой, да ещё и в системном каталоге, понимания пока не было. Попытка вручную удалить файл завершилась ошибкой » Access is denied «.

Стало понятно, что либо файл удерживается каким-то процессом, либо имеет какие-то хитрые разрешения. Прежде чем погружаться в дальнейшее изучение вопроса с проверкой прав доступа и вычислением процесса, блокирующего доступ к файлу, сделал быстрый заход в поисковую систему по маске имени файла vmg.tmp и тут же нашёл одну интересную ветку обсуждения. Намёк в сторону управляющего процесса Hyper-V, порождающего временные файлы типа vmg.tmp при работе с ISО-образом компонент интеграции, привёл меня в лог Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V-VMMS\Storage, который оказался переполнен ошибками типа:

Это напомнило мне ранее описанную ситуацию с невозможностью обновления ISO-образа компонент интеграции из-за того, что файл образа %windir%\system32\vmguest.iso был занят запущенной виртуальной машиной.

И действительно, просмотрев свойства виртуальных машин, запущенных на хосте, было обнаружено, что в одной из ВМ был подключен ISO-образ компонент интеграции.

Отключение данного ISO-образа из свойств виртуальной машины привело к исчезновению недоступного для удаления временного файла.

После чего была предпринята новая попытка сжатия диска, которая на этот раз прошла успешно.

В ходе выполнения операций сжатия в Application-логе событие из источника Defrag оповестило об успешной оптимизации перед непосредственным процессом усечения тома.

На этом дело о неработающем сжатии можно было считать закрытым, но при этом остался осадок изумления от самой возможности появления причинно-следственной связи между, казалось бы, несвязанными обстоятельствами – установленным в свойствах виртуальной машины образом компонент интеграции и неработающим сжатием системного тома NTFS.

Комичность всей описанной ситуации дополняет то, что в самом начале, когда я получил ошибку невозможности сжатия, в качестве профилактического мероприятия была выполнена дефрагментация тома и утилита дефрагментации с честными глазами сказала мне, что теперь на томе всё красиво.

So, what may be the reasons of getting that error?

I don’t think that application want to return gigabytes of data. Actually, the issue occurs when it returns a 20MB file.

Thanks for asking question! You may want to know that App Service is a service running on top of the Azure PaaS (platform as a service) infrastructure. As a result, the local drives that are «attached» to a virtual machine are the same drive types available to any worker role running in Azure. This includes:

• An operating system drive (the D:\ drive)
• An application drive that contains Azure Package cspkg files used exclusively by App Service (and inaccessible to customers)
• A «user» drive (the C:\ drive), whose size varies depending on the size of the VM.

So, Its important to monitor your disk utilization as your application grows. If the disk quota is reached, it can have adverse effects to your application. For example:

• The app may throw an error indicating not enough space on the disk.
• You may see disk errors when browsing to the Kudu console.
• Deployment from Azure DevOps or Visual Studio may fail with ERROR_NOT_ENOUGH_DISK_SPACE: Web deployment task failed.
(Web Deploy detected insufficient space on disk).
• Your app may suffer slow performance.

Also, its little tricky to figure out this issue as you may have multiple Web Apps in an App Service Plan. If one of the Web Apps is taking more disk space than the others, you may not be able to easily identify which Web App to investigate.

Also, try checking the App Service Plan quotas by going to App service plan and selecting Quotas. Additionally suggest you to check the application files in the D:\home\site\wwwroot from the Azure kudu tool (https://yoursite.scm.azurewebsites.net/) and available disk space on the Environment page. You may try increasing the pricing tier plan and see if that helps to resolve the issue.

I Have a dynamic disk on a windows 2008 server, and its not the OS volume.

But any other suggestions are appreciated.

It should have worked. Make sure the system isn’t paging to this vloume.

But the page file is not on this volume. I am really confused by this: it is a Dynamic NTFS data volume, set as a GPT volume and I still can’t get it to expand with disk manager. I can even see the unallocated space.

I would try this with diskpart but I don’t know how to use this tool good enough.

This is very critical for me and any other suggestions are greatly appreciated

Any system event logs entries related to these attempts?

Sometimes it is caused by disk fragment as a piece of fragment is in the end of the volume, so system cannot expand the volume as there is «data» in the end of it.

You can test to run a defragmenter to see if issue can be solved. If still not, you may consider using a third party disk management tool to do the job.

I ran diskeeper and defragged the disk, but I am still getting the same error.

Do you know exactly what this error means?

What is it referring to when it means «there is not enough space on the disk» what disk?

How does it determine the free space?

Is there some way I can understand how it thinks there is no space on the disk?

Because the disk I am trying to expand has 250 GB free. and I can even see in diskmanager 900 GB of contiguous allocated space availabe.

Perhaps some of the advanced commands diskpart can give a clue?

Any suggestions on why it thinks the disk has not free space?

1) Basic volumes are basically partitions. They can only be extended only if they have consecutive free space.

2) Dynamic volumes can be extended to other dynamic disks.

So if you try to extend basic volume make sure you have consecutive free space available.

If it is a dynamic volume convert disk 2 to dynamic and now extend the volume. This should resolve your issue.

I am trying to Expand the dynamic disk to unallocated space on the same disk. This is a raid array attached to the server that I have just expanded.

I tried to upload a screen print but it won’t let me, the file is to big. Do you have an email address i can send it to you?

I think I have identified the problem:

The way «dynamic disks» (aka «LDM partitions») work is to treat a set of partitions (in my case, partition #1 from this disk and presumably other partitions from other disks) as if it were a disk. You can then add, delete, and modify partitions within that partition.

The trouble is that the main LDM partition on this disk is too small.

What’s more, there are two partitions between it and the underlying 931 GiB of free space on the disk.

Dynamic disks are based on a single partition LDM Data partition. It internally contains details for various volumes. Basically here partition 2 is the metadata partition which says how volumes are organized. Actual data resides in partition 1 that is LDM Data partition. In windows if there are 2 dynamic disks it will contain same LDM Metadata and they contain records for various volume entities and where they reside like on disk1, disk2 or, etc.

Second; the «extend filesystem» is the replacement of an old Microsoft support tool called fsextend.exe. There are some cases where the partition itself is extended, but the filesystem allocations were not. The reasons for this are unknown to me. the «DISKPART> extend filesystem» will then extend the filesystem on the already extended partition.

Win 2008 R2 SP1, tried to extend a F drive (dynamic) drive (not system, boot or anything just Healthy drive 😉

I had the same issue. After upgrading all of the drives in the array, I used the RAID controller’s OCE (Online Capacity Expansion) to expand the array. Disk Management in Windows Server 2012 saw the unallocated space, but would not extend the Dynamic volume giving the error «There is not enough space available on the disk(s) to complete this operation.»

After initiating «Rescan Disks» in Disk Manager, the Extend Volume function worked.

Recently, I also have this kind of problem on my new purchased lenovo X1 carbon. It turns out that I need to delete the lenovo recovery software which takes up 13.3GB space. After I remove it, everything goes back normal.

If you are using a pre configured laptop or desktop that is set up by the manufacturer, then this problem arises, as there are certain limits on windows 7 and 8. Also the drives they create are of different system, So if you have a problem partitioning such kind of systems then copy any data stored in back up or recovery partition. Then delete the partition from windows disk manager, once this is done shrink main primary partition and with the allocated space shown create a new disk. then the error no disk space will not show up. and partitions can be created.

Maybe too late for this now. but I had similar issue. To resolve did a rescan of disk in question. Then was able to extend successfully

Right-clicking on Disk Management, choose to rescan the disks. After this is completed, you will be able to extend the volume.

I have two identical servers and both were displaying the error mentioned in the original post when I tried to extend the existing volume. Both servers had three LUNs (2TB, 2TB, and 1TB) joined together as Dynamic Disks in a single Spanned Volume. (Our old SANs limit LUN size to a maximum of 2TB.) Both servers then had 512GB added to the final, 1TB LUN. Per this thread, I used DISKPART’s EXTEND FILESYSTEM on the first server and then I was able to extend the Spanned Volume from 5TB to 5.5TB. The last LUN in Disk Manager displayed nicely as 1.5TB.

On the second server, I did not use DISKPART, but instead just did a Rescan Disks in Disk Manager, also recommended in this thread. I was then able to extend the Spanned Volume from 5TB to 5.5TB there as well. However, the last LUN in Disk Manager displayed as the original 1TB and an additional partition of 512GB.

Based on this, I’d recommend the EXTEND FILESYSTEM approach, which looks cleaner. I don’t know if there is a performance benefit to either approach.

Try rescanning the disk, it might work.

Ran these commands

diskpart> list disk

diskpart> extend disk=

Then I was able to extend the volume in the Disk Management GUI.

Re-scanning the disk worked for me 🙂

I know this is an old post, but this helped saved an important VM for me.

I was able to allocate more space for the VHD in Hyper-V, but I had to get into the VM in order to expand the volume. I knew the VM would be gone for me if I couldn’t fix this, so I interrupted the machine’s booting and Windows Update processing when I wasn’t supposed to, but all I got was the automatic repair, which couldn’t fix the Window Update issues, and I would get into the infinite loop again.

I used F8 during boot to get the advanced options, and the only option that could work was the safe mode with command prompt (all other still resulted in the infinite loop).

Diskpart commands didn’t work for expanding the volume, even though the volume had available space immediately after it using the expansion from the Hyper-V tools. Using the command «extend filesystem» then «extend» fixed the issue. At the next reboot, the Windows Update tasks completed, and the VM is working again.
