If I get turned on normally, the computer functions properly. But if I put it to sleep and then activate it again, the problem appears. And then I have to force restart two or three times until it gets turned on normally.

I have 2 hard drives and the original Apple I have divided into two partitions. One of the partitions has the OSX 10.5.8 system (the hard drive I always use), and the other partition is installed on OSX 10.5.6 system (I never use this partition and the installation is the original, not installed applications, or boot the computer with this system).

The problem occurs in both operation systems. Why?

I have analyzed using the «Disk Utility» system 10.5.8, and I do not see problems. I have also repaired the permissions but the problem persists.

What is the problem on my Mac? Is it a problem of Software or Hardware?

The last thing I did, until I started the problem was to uninstall and install «Google Earth 5.2.1.1588». To uninstall I used «AppZapper».

Could it be a battery problem carrying the computer? Could be lightly loaded?

Could it be the RAM? I have 1 GB of RAM. Two DDR SDRAM 512 MB, but the system profile appear as correct.

Why do happens on both operating systems?

I would appreciate to help me.

Greetings and thanks.

Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button.”).

That is the message you get when you have what’s called a kernel panic. If you are getting kernel panics just trying to start up, there is something very wrong going on with your system. Have you tried booting to the restore disc included with your mini?

It sounds like your LaCie has the wrong drivers for the operating system in question or firmware. Contact by e-mail firewire AT lacie.com for support, or visit http://www.lacie.com/ and look at their support pages while your Lacie hard drives are NOT connected to your Mac. Only connect them after the appropriate software is installed for your operating system.

Better yet, if there is no data you wish to save on the Lacie drives is to use backup software such as Shirt Pocket Superduper, or Bombich Carbon Copy Cloner after reformatting the hard drive with Disk Utility. That way you usually don’t have to worry about what Lacie software you have installed. Do this especially if the operating system you have installed can’t be matched up with any Lacie software.

Question: Q: You need to restart your computer. & I can’t install Mac OS X again.

Hi. I don’t remember the exact conditions but at one time i think my imac 24″ (10.5.8) powered it self down. Whenever i try to restart i get the message: *»You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button.»*

Whenever i put in Installation Disc 1 en press the D key, i succesfully (extended) checked hardware, and everything is fine. When i press the C key (Disc 1 is still inserted), i succesfully managed to check and repair permissions and check the hd, again everything is fine.

Is it possible that i need to put in Installation Disc 2? How do I get Installation Disc 1 out of my iMac? Might Installation Discs have been switched from an Imac 20″ to an Imac 24″ in a drawer in my closet? And might that be why i can’t perform an Archive & Install?

*What are other options to get my Imac back to work?* I have a back-up of all important files. Just a couple of little, less important files that i prefered to get off of my imac because i haven’t backed those up yet.

Thanks for all the help!
Vincent.

— This is most likely a kernel panic

— This only means your not putting the right installation disc. Double check the other installation disc that you may have and try it again

Is it possible that i need to put in Installation Disc 2? How do I get Installation Disc 1 out of my iMac? Might Installation Discs have been switched from an Imac 20″ to an Imac 24″ in a drawer in my closet? And might that be why i can’t perform an Archive & Install?

— If you want to take out the CD, shutdown the mac. Turn it on while pressing the mouse key. It will eject the CD

What are other options to get my Imac back to work? I have a back-up of all important files. Just a couple of little, less important files that i prefered to get off of my imac because i haven’t backed those up yet.

— Ultimately, just perform a target disk mode of your problematic mac to a working mac. Get the files out. Then USE THE CORRECT installation disc. and do an fresh install(erase and install). After doing that Don’t put your files just yet, perform a software update. See if it gives you a kernel panic again. If not put the files back(I meant your backup)

I am running 10.5.8 and I don’t have any issues. There maybe some 3rd party software that conflicted with the update. I don’t know.

Question: Q: «You need to restart your computer» message

I’m asking this question for a friend who has a brand new iMac. She is using OS 10.6.4, and is using DSL through AT&T.

She gets an error message that I have never seen before (and I’ve been using a Mac since 1985). She forwarded a picture of the error message to me, and what it looks like is a black background with a small white border, and the icon of the Apple power button in the background (on top of the black background). The message says the following:

«You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button».

Below this, I’m guessing it says the same thing but it is in 3 additional languages.

I have never seen an Apple product with an error message that is inside of a black window that just appears on-screen like that. And the thing that has me scratching my head is that it says to restart by holding down the power button for several seconds. Well, in my opinion, that’s not a restart—that is a FORCED restart. If this was a legitimate Apple message, wouldn’t they be more specific as to what it is you’re doing—and why.

This whole thing makes no sense to me, so I wanted to check here and see if anyone is familiar with this type of thing.

She also said that ever since this has been happening, there has been a «hesitation» in the wireless keyboard and the wireless mouse responding (both have full battery levels). And then just before the «restart» message appears, she told me that a grey film came down across the screen just prior to the restart message window appearing.

Any thoughts on this? Thank you so much!

Standard kernel panic (attack),

Ah, okay. in that very first link that you provided, it shows the exact picture of the message that she received. I will have to read through all of this stuff to figure out what it is (I’ve never heard of a kernel panic attack).

Just off the top of your head, is there a simple explanation as to what might have caused it to occur? Something like a virus that might have been downloaded or something? I’m a heavy user of my Mac’s, and I’ve never experienced anything like that. Weird.
