Fix: The VPN Client agent was unable to create the interprocess communication depot
Some users get the VPN client agent was unable to create the interprocess communication depot error during the installation of Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client. Other users are reporting that they encounter the error when trying to launch the AnyConnect application. The issue is mostly reported to occur with version 3.1.05170.

What is Cisco AnyConnect?
Cisco AnyConnect is a unified security agent that delivers multiple security services to protect enterprises from security attacks. Although it includes a VPN feature, Cisco AnyConnect is much more than a VPN.
This software can be described as a modular endpoint software product that protects networks from security threats. Among other things, Cisco AnyConnect includes security features like web inspection, malware protection, on and off premise visibility.
What is causing the VPN client agent was unable to create the interprocess error?
We investigated the issue by trying to replicate the error and looking at various other user reports. Based on what we gathered, this particular error is always occurring when internet connection sharing is enabled.
As it turns out, Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is not compatible with the AnyConnect software. In order to allow AnyConnect proper functionality, users must disable the Internet Connection Sharing feature.
If you try to install or launch the AnyConnect application while ICS is enabled on the same machine, the application will return the following error:
“The VPN client agent was unable to create the interprocess communication depot.”
If you’re struggling to resolve this particular issue, this article will provide you with a list of verified repair steps. Below you have a couple of fixes that other users in a similar situation have used to get the issue resolved. Keep in mind that some of the methods presented below we’re only confirmed to work on a single Windows version. If you want to save as much time as possible follow a method that was confirmed for your operating system.
Method 1: Preventing other network users from using the current Internet connection
This particular method was only confirmed to be effective on Windows 7, but we found that it can also be replicated on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.
A couple of users have managed to resolve the issue permanently by accessing the Network tab of Control Panel and disabling an option that allowed other network users to connect using the current machine’s internet connection.
Note: This method is to be preferred because it fixes the problem without disabling the ICS service completely.
Here’s a quick guide on resolving the issue by preventing other network users from connecting through this computer’s internet connection:
If this method wasn’t applicable or you’re looking for a different approach, move down to the next method below.
Method 2: Changing the startup type of the ICS service to Disabled
If you are prepared to lose some functionality, the fix is as easy as stopping the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service. However, this is only a temporary fix since the service is scheduled to start automatically at every startup. Even more, following this procedure means that you’ll lose the functionality of the ICS service which will hinder the PC’s ability to share your internet connection with other machines.
Several users in a similar situation have managed to get the issue resolved permanently by stopping the ICS service from the Services screen and then changing the Startup type of the service to Disabled. This will ensure that Windows does not re-open the Internet Connection Sharing service at the next startup and the VPN client agent was unable to create the interprocess communication depot error resurfaces.
Note: The guide below can be successfully replicated on all the recent Windows versions (Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10).
Here’s a quick guide on disabling the ICS service on Windows 10 via the Services screen:

i cant able to install the cisco VPN anyconnect, its showing the error is THE VPNCLIENT AGENT WAS UNABLE TO CREATE THE INTERPROCESS COMMUNICATION DEPOT
FIX: VPN client unable to create interprocess communication
Cisco AnyConnect is a complex VPN tool that helps remote workers access enterprise resources in a secure, effortless manner, from any supported device.
This software utility also integrates advanced protection in order to block malware at endpoints, thus ensuring a safe work environment.
Despite Cisco AnyConnect’s straight-forwardness, certain users reported having a difficult time while trying to install or launch the program.
To be more specific, during installation or while trying to launch Cisco AnyConnect, users would be prompted with an error message:
VPN client agent was unable to create the interprocess communication depot.
As it turns out, this issue is not uncommon and has a couple of easy-to-follow fixes. Check them out below:
Access content across the globe at the highest speed rate.
Secure multiple devices and enjoy stable connections anywhere.
Connect to thousands of servers for persistent seamless browsing.
Price convenient VPN service with all-rounded security features.
Works with all operating systems from a single account.
How can I fix the VPN client agent interprocess communication error?
Disable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)
The Internet Connection Sharing feature is not compatible with Cisco AnyConnect.
Therefore, trying to run or install the VPN client on a system with shared network connections may end up prompting you with the error above.
For that reason, make sure you’ve disabled ICS on all of your active network connections before installing/launching Cisco AnyConnect.
If the method above doesn’t seem to work for you, proceed to our second suggested fix below.
Disable the ICS Service
Conclusion
All things considered, it’s easy to see that both solutions revolve around disabling the Internet Connection Sharing feature.
Most of the time, disabling the ICS straight from the shared connection should restore Cisco AnyConnect’s functionality.
However, if the issue has deeper roots, you may need to get your hands dirty and disable the ICS service altogether.
Companies can sell this information, alongside your location and internet provider name, and profit from it by serving targeted ads or monitoring your data usage.

VPN: Error mentions «specified secure gateway» or «interprocess communication depot» (PC or Mac)
Windows Users (macOS users, please scroll to the bottom)
There are a couple of reasons why a Windows user will get the error «AnyConnect was not able to establish a connection to the specified secure gateway» or «The VPN client agent was unable to create the interprocess communication depot» while trying to connect using the Software VPN:
Here’s how to fix both problems.
More than 1 user is logged on to the computer at one time
Advise the user to restart the computer. This will logoff any other users who may be logged on. If the problem persists, read on.
Check to see if ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) is running
Additionally, check that the ICS service is not running.
macOS users
Unfortunately the current AnyConnect VPN client will only run on macOS versions newer than 10.12 (Sierra). Please update your operating system. Faculty and staff should partner their with their local CSC, and students should reach out to AntTech for assistance. The OITHD cannot assist with OS upgrades, and we cannot implement any changes to the network to get your computer to connect to the VPN. We apologize for the inconvenience. You may continue to use the WebVPN at https://vpn.uci.edu
Versions older than macOS 10.12 are no longer supported by Apple, so our recommendation is that you upgrade to at least Mavericks. Your system could be vulnerable to attacks that are fixed in newer releases, and your system could be compromised and used to attack other systems (and possibly used to attack UCI when you are using the VPN).
In addition, there are bug fixes and security updates to the VPN client that necessitate it being updated to fix problems other users are having and to prevent security issues with older clients.
